On GitHub: A utility-first CSS framework for rapid UI development.
Open on GitHubTailwind CSS takes a different approach from component frameworks such as Bootstrap. Instead of ready-made .card or .navbar classes, it gives you low-level utilities such as flex, gap-4, p-6, text-lg, and md:grid-cols-3, and you compose them directly in your markup. Its tooling scans your source files and generates CSS only for the classes it finds.
Supporters like that styles stay next to the markup, that a shared scale for spacing and color keeps designs consistent, and that unused CSS never ships. Critics point to long class attributes. Both views are fair, and the right choice depends on your team. Understanding plain Flexbox, Grid, and the cascade still matters, since every utility maps to ordinary CSS properties.
Tailwind CSS v4 moved configuration into CSS itself: you import Tailwind in your stylesheet and customize design tokens with the @theme directive instead of a JavaScript config file. When following tutorials, check which major version they target, because setup steps changed between v3 and v4.
