On GitHub: Reliable PostgreSQL Backup & Restore

Open on GitHub

pgBackRest builds on PostgreSQL’s physical backup and WAL archiving and handles the parts that are tedious to script yourself: full, differential and incremental backups, parallel compression (for example lz4 or zstd), retention policies, checksums, and a WAL archive-push/archive-get pair you plug into archive_command and restore_command.

Backups can be stored in a local or remote repository or in object storage (S3-compatible, Azure, GCS), optionally encrypted. A delta restore uses checksums to copy only files that differ, which can make restoring a large cluster much faster. Point-in-time recovery uses the same recovery targets as plain PostgreSQL.

Read the project’s user guide for your distribution before deploying, and test restores regularly, as with any backup tool.
