What is DNS?

DNS is the internet's phone book: it turns names like example.com into the IP addresses computers actually use.

Drafted with AI from official documentation. Scripts were run in a test environment and repository links verified. Awaiting a human check. Did it work for you? Last edited Outdated?

DNS (Domain Name System) translates human friendly names such as example.com into IP addresses such as 93.184.216.34. You remember a friend’s name, not their phone number; your phone looks up the number for you. DNS does the same for every website, mail server and API you use.

Every time you open a page, your device asks a DNS resolver (often run by your ISP or a public one such as 1.1.1.1) for the address. Records come in types: A for IPv4, AAAA for IPv6, CNAME for aliases, MX for mail. When a site is unreachable but others work, DNS is the first thing to test. Changes to records can take minutes to hours to spread, which is called propagation.
