An IP address is a numeric label for a device on a network. It is the street address of a computer: packets of data carry a destination address and routers deliver them hop by hop. IPv4 addresses look like 192.168.1.20; the newer IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::1 and exist because IPv4 ran out of room.

At home your router hands out private addresses (192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) to your devices and shows one public address to the internet. Servers usually get a fixed address so clients can always find them. The address 127.0.0.1 (localhost) always means this very machine, which is why development servers listen there.

ip addr show
curl -s https://ifconfig.me
