Uptime Kuma: self-hosted uptime monitoring

Uptime Kuma is a self-hosted monitoring tool with a web UI that checks websites, TCP ports, DNS, Docker containers and more, draws uptime history and sends alerts. One container is all it needs.

Drafted with AI from official documentation. Scripts were run in a test environment and repository links verified. Awaiting a human check. Did it work for you? Last edited Outdated?

On GitHub: A fancy self-hosted monitoring tool

Open on GitHub

Uptime Kuma is a Node.js application that watches your services and tells you when they go down. It has about 92k stars, is released under the MIT licence, and is one of the most popular things people run in Docker on a home server or a small VPS. The web interface shows a response-time graph and uptime percentage per monitor, and public status pages can be published for users.

What it does

  • Monitor types: HTTP(S) with keyword or JSON checks, TCP port, ping, DNS, Docker container state, database connections, push monitors for cron jobs, and more.
  • Notifications to more than 90 services, including email, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Matrix, Gotify and generic webhooks.
  • Status pages, maintenance windows, certificate expiry warnings and a two-factor protected login.
  • All data is stored locally, by default in an embedded SQLite database inside the /app/data volume.

When to use it

Use it when you want to know that your own services are up without paying for a hosted monitoring product, and when a few dozen to a few hundred checks are enough. It is a good first monitoring tool to pair with Docker Compose stacks: one monitor per published service plus one Docker monitor per container. For metrics, dashboards and alert rules on numbers, a Prometheus and Grafana stack is the next step; Uptime Kuma also exposes a /metrics endpoint for Prometheus.

How to install or try it

docker run -d --restart=always -p 3001:3001 -v uptime-kuma:/app/data --name uptime-kuma louislam/uptime-kuma:2

Then open http://localhost:3001 and create the admin account on first visit. The named volume uptime-kuma holds the database and all settings; back it up before upgrading, and upgrade with docker pull louislam/uptime-kuma:2, then remove and re-run the container with the same command. On a server exposed to the internet, publish it as -p 127.0.0.1:3001:3001 and put a reverse proxy with TLS in front.
