On GitHub: A simple, fast and user-friendly alternative to 'find'

Open on GitHub

find is powerful but verbose: find . -iname '*report*'. With fd the same search is fd report. The pattern is a regular expression by default, matching is case-insensitive unless the pattern contains an uppercase letter, and output is colored. Like ripgrep, it is written in Rust, skips hidden files and anything in .gitignore, and searches in parallel.

Common options: fd -e md finds files by extension, fd -t d build only finds directories, fd -H includes hidden files, fd -I includes ignored ones, and fd -x command runs a command for each result, similar to find -exec. For example, fd -e jpg -x convert {} {.}.png converts every JPEG in a tree.

On Debian and Ubuntu the package is fd-find and the binary is installed as fdfind, because another package already used the name fd; you can add an alias. fd does not try to replace every feature of find, so keep find for complex permission or time queries.
