This is the upstream repository of systemd. It contains far more than PID 1: systemctl, the journal (journald and journalctl), systemd-networkd, systemd-resolved and resolvectl, timers, systemd-analyze and many smaller tools. Distributions package it, so you normally install it through apt or dnf, not from here.

For administrators the repository is most useful for its man/ directory (the source of every systemd manual page), the release notes in NEWS, which list new and changed unit options per version, and the issue tracker, where you can check whether odd behavior is a known bug. Because distributions ship different systemd versions, compare your version (systemctl --version) with the release notes before relying on a newer option.
