OpenTofu was forked from Terraform after HashiCorp changed Terraform’s license to the Business Source License. The repository is licensed under MPL-2.0 and developed in the open under the Linux Foundation, with a steering committee for larger decisions.

The command is tofu, with the familiar subcommands init, plan, apply and destroy. It reads .tf files and works with the existing provider ecosystem. OpenTofu-specific features include client-side encryption of state and plan files.

The repository holds the Go source, issue tracker and RFC process. Installation packages and the documentation are linked from the project website, opentofu.org.
