On GitHub: MariaDB server is a community developed fork of MySQL server. Started by core members of the original MySQL team, MariaDB actively works with outside developers to deliver the most featureful, stable, and sanely licensed open SQL server in the industry.

MariaDB Server began as a fork of MySQL led by the original MySQL developers and keeps a high degree of MySQL compatibility while adding its own features, storage engines and replication changes. This repository contains the server, the mariadb client tools (with mysql* compatibility names) and the test suite.

The README states that MariaDB Server is licensed under GPL version 2, inherited from MySQL. Bugs are tracked in MariaDB’s Jira at jira.mariadb.org, security issues follow the repository’s SECURITY.md, and contribution guidelines are in CONTRIBUTING.md.

Read it alongside the MariaDB documentation when you need to know exactly how MariaDB differs from MySQL for your version, for example in GTID handling or authentication plugins.
