According to its README, Valkey was forked from the open source Redis project right before Redis moved to source-available licenses. The project describes itself as a BSD-licensed, high-performance key-value datastore backed by the Linux Foundation.

Because it starts from the BSD-licensed Redis code, Valkey keeps the same data types, protocol and configuration concepts, so the Redis articles on persistence, eviction and ACLs largely apply. The binaries are named valkey-server and valkey-cli. Versions after the fork have diverged, so check the Valkey documentation for features added on either side.

Several cloud providers offer managed Valkey services. Choose between Redis and Valkey based on licensing needs, the features you require and what your platform supports, and test your client libraries against the server you pick.
